We are seeking experienced Building Surveyors of all levels to fit within and complement our existing team.

The qualifications and experience required for an experienced Building Surveyor would include a construction or design related degree or diploma with a minimum of 5 years’ practical experience. The candidate would also ideally hold or be working toward membership with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and/or the New Zealand Institute of Building Surveyors (NZIBS)

Graduate Building Surveyors will have the relevant tertiary qualification such as a construction, building science or design-related degree or diploma. We will also consider an equivalent qualification that covers knowledge of present and historic New Zealand construction practices and legislation, forensic investigation skills and exposure to the expert witness process.

The organisation:

The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) regulates building and plumbing practitioners to ensure the achievement of efficient and competitive building and plumbing industries in Victoria.

The role:

The Operations Division is responsible for the end to end management of the practitioner life cycle, from registration, oversight, education, advice, and when necessary practitioner discipline. The division is responsible for all key regulatory functions within the VBA.
The State Building Surveyor is a newly established role in this team, that will act as a ‘head of profession’ for building surveyors across Victoria. The position will report the Executive Director Operations.
The role will bring technical expertise and proactively communicate best practice in managing compliance risk within the building industry. The role will perform an educative function within the industry to improve compliance outcomes over time. The State Building Surveyor will support building sector practitioners and agencies in creating an environment where Victorians are confident in the state’s building practices and compliance.

The position has seven direct reports, and directly leads the Technical and Regulation Division:

The State Building Surveyor will provide authoritative compliance advice to the building industry. This advice will cover all technical elements of compliance, guidance and interpretation of the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and relevant standards.
The role aims to improve the building sector’s reputation and performance in partnership with government and industry stakeholders. Additionally, the State Building Surveyor must drive better protection for consumers and confidence in building practitioners.

The candidate (Key Selection Criteria):

Minimum requirements

  • Qualified Building Surveyor (Unlimited)
  • Extensive technical building knowledge and experience

Position specific requirements:

  • The focus of the position is on leadership and guidance (head of profession).
  • The position is the industry ‘navigator’, assisting with access to services and functions, including access to education services, authoritative technical advice on products and cladding rectification.
  • The position is not involved in inspections, compliance or enforcement activities, but will be responsible for monitoring industry wide trends.
  • The position reports to the role of Executive Director Operations.

The offer:

The State Building Surveyor role is an EO2 level position with a Total Remuneration Package between $210,670 p.a. – $337,194 p.a. (Inclusive of 9.5% superannuation) and additional benefits.
