Graham Brocklebank is an Architectural Designer at Brox Design in Christchurch. After attending the New Zealand Institute of Building Surveyors’ (NZIBS) core training modules, he can now promote his business as a ‘one-stop-shop’ for prospective clients with building issues.
“If a client comes to us, not only can we design a build, but now that I have completed the NZIBS training, we can assess, design & manage repairs or maintenance to suit their requirements.
“This way it reduces any confusion when multiple consultants are involved, and it becomes a much clearer process for them.”
Graham found out about the NZIBS training modules through a colleague who recommended the Institutes modules to him.
He started the core module training in Late 2015 and completed it this year. He has now applied for full registration with the Institute.
“I really enjoyed the NZIBS training modules. They encouraged investigation into what was happening in the background of a structure, not just what you see at first glance. I would fully recommend to other professionals to undertake the training to get an understanding of the science behind the investigations.
“I have now got a far better understanding of how our buildings have been damaged as a result of poor building design and construction practices in the past.
“Now that I understand how the damage in our buildings can occur, I can work out how to go forward and design and manage a repair to satisfy the Building code and regulations.”
With 25 years’ experience in the construction industry, Graham has seen many changes that the industry has experienced over the years, and expects the industry to change even further, including more regulation due to previous failings.
“The core basics and values in building surveying will remain the same, however the changes will come in the evolution of new materials, how we will use them and the skill level of practioner’s.”
